A smorgasbord of species visiting anglers this week as marlin, tuna, wahoo, dorado, and other exciting catches were made.

Pisces Fleet Weekly update from May  2 – May 8, 2025

This week, the Striped Marlin took center stage with impressive
numbers caught almost daily. The fleet’s success was further underscored by a diverse range of catches, including the exciting Dorado, the powerful Yellowfin, the elusive Wahoo, and the unique Roosterfish, adding a variety of thrilling stories to anglers’ successful tales.
The Marlin activity at the 95 Spot and 1150 Spots stood out and seemed to be the hotspots of the week, promising potential for future successful trips.

Striped Marlin: The clear highlight, with catches from boats like “BBII,” “VALERIE,” “ANDREA,” and others. The estimated sizes of the released fish ranged from 100 to 140 pounds, showcasing their abundance and size variability.

Yellowfin Tuna: Featured prominently on boats like “BILL COLLECTOR II,” “VALERIE,” and “LA CHINGONA 2,” caught using bait, lures, and feathers.

Dorado: Although they were small and caught less frequently, boats like “ADRIANA” and “LISTO” landed a few, weighing around 10 to 20 pounds.

Wahoo: A few larger Wahoo were landed this week, weighing in at 35 to 65 pounds. This unique catch added a dash of excitement to the week and made for some memorable fishing stories, sparking curiosity about what unique catches the next week might bring.

Friday, May 2, 2025: Skies were clear, seas were calm, with a wave height of 3-4 feet, and water temperatures ranging from 68°F to 75°F. The day was perfect for a successful fishing trip.

Mark Chiavetta, from California, chose the “BILL COLLECTOR II,” a 35-foot Cabo Flybridge, with Captain Juan Lopez and Mate JC Martinez. His successful experience, which included catching and releasing a 110-pound Striped Marlin on bait, a 15-pound Dorado on feathers, and two 12-pound Yellowfin Tuna also on feathers, is a testament to the potential of a great Pisces trip and an inspiration to others to reserve their fishing adventures.

Captain Hector and Mate Lalo took their anglers, including Jerdal Whitaker, John Godfrey, Richard Godfrey, Ryan Caughen, to the 1150 Spot on the “BBII,” a 37-foot 2018 Viking Billfish. There, they caught and released two 120-pound Striped Marlin. The weather was pleasantly warm, with temperatures in the 70s, and the fishing was productive. The crew’s easy-going and fun nature added to their successful experience.

Pepe Valdes Morton from Cabo San Lucas, Mexico, on the “BBII,” a 37-foot Viking Billfish 2018 with Captain Mauricio, and Mates Reyes, and Morales, caught and released one 110-pound Striped Marlin on bait, and one 55-pound Wahoo on Ballyhoo at the 95 Spot. His experience was a perfect blend of teamwork and skill, evidenced by his enjoyment and overall satisfaction with his trip.
 

Chase Parsons, Dennis Gonzalez, Kevin Maddox, and Mark Darner, from Florida, chartered the “LA CHINGONA 2,” a 64-foot Viking, with Captain Antonio Bojorquez and Mates Miguel and Daniel. They caught three Yellowfin Tuna off the Cabrillo Mount using bait. They enjoyed their day with the Captain and crew.

Loren Whims and Paul Lancia selected the “ADRIANA,” a 28-foot Uniflite with Captain Frank running the boat and Mate Arturo overseeing the cockpit for their fishing day. They ran to the 95 Spot, where they caught one 106-pound Striped Marlin on bait and two Dorado on bait. Each catch was from skills honed over years of fishing in Cabo waters.

“BILL COLLECTOR,” a 32-foot Cabo Express, with Captain Niko and Mate Erik, had its anglers, Gina Ellis, Julie Oglesby, Kristina, Wiley Paul, Oglesby Thomas Wiley, and William Wiley, use traditional bait to catch six Yellowfin Tuna and one elusive 60-pound Silky Shark at the 95 Spot. The catches were testaments to the crew’s exceptional fishing ability.

Dominick Bellino and Kristina Bellino from Illinois chose the “ADRIANA,” a 28-foot Uniflite, with Captain Frank and Mate Mario, who caught a trophy-sized, 65-pound Wahoo on Ballyhoo at the 1150 Spot. The kicker is that these big boys are around, but seldom do they get that large.
Also, Garrett Moll, Lindsay Koch, Mecca Moll, and  Ryan Koch chartered the “KARINA,” a 30-foot Bertram, with the fish-loving Captain Bruce Montayo and Mate Jorge Velez running the boat. They ran to the 1150 Spot, where they caught one Dorado on a lure.

Cam Melville and Fataneh Melville, under the guidance of Captain Ray Winkler and Mate Jesus Winkler on the “LA BRISA,” a 31-foot Bertram, caught a 100-pound Silky Shark on bait at the 1150 Spot, creating an unforgettable day’s tale! Watta Day!

“KARINA,” a 30-foot Bertram, with the fish-loving Captain Bruce Montayo and Mate Jorge Velez helped paint a picture of triumph from Asheboro, North Carolina to Cabo San Lucas when Amber Munley, and Brian Munley, caught and released three (60, 90, and 140-pound) Striped Marlin on bait at the 95 Spot.

“VALERIE,”  a 35-foot Bertram with Captain Roberto Sandez and Mate Salvador Flores, took Carolyn Gaspar and John Turner from  Dallas, Texas, where they caught one 80-pound Striped Marlin on caballito outside the 95 Spot, and seven Yellowfin Tuna on bait and lures at the same Spot.  The day was a testament to the diverse species and the abundance of fish in these waters.

Cecilia Pontarolo and Rip Pontarolo, from Laramie, Wyoming, chartered the “RUTHLESS,” a 31-foot Bertram, run by Captain Beto Lira and Mate Jesus Romero. They caught and released one Striped Marlin on bait and one 35-pound Wahoo on a Rapala at the Cabrillo.
Dancing around the boat, they lived up to the boat’s namesake, believing that nature met its match in skill and spirit at the Cabrillo.

The “VALERIE, ”  a 35-foot Bertram, with Captain Roberto Sandez and Mate Salvador Flores, had a highly successful day.  Their guests, Carolyn Gaspar and John Turner from Dallas, Texas, caught and released one 80-pound Striped Marlin on a caballito and seven Yellowfin Tuna on bait, outside the 95 spot. They caught a significant number of fish, and though tired after the long day of catching the Tuna and Marlin, they were excited that their day had gone so well.

Cam Melville and Fataneh Melville were welcomed on the “BILL COLLECTOR II,” a 35-foot Cabo Flybridge by Captain Lopez and Mate Martinez. It seems good luck was with them that day as they caught and released two Striped Marlin weighing between 100 and 120 pounds on ballyhoo at the 1150 Spot.

“BBII,” a 37-foot Viking Billfish 2018, with Captain Hector and Mates Gil and Nayo, ran to the 1150 Spot, where their guests, Matthew LaRose, Paul Farrell III, Ma Paul Farrell IV, and Paul LaRose, caught and released five Striped Marlin from 100 to 120 pounds on Ballyhoo. Every catch was a testament to the crews’ exceptional knowledge and ability.

“KARINA,” a 30-foot Bertram, with Captain Bruce and Mate Jorge Velez, immediately took to their anglers, from Eureka, CA,  
Howard Lahaie, Jacob Lahie, Julian Juchnik, and Tim Lorenzo. They were a lively bunch and were eager to fish. They caught and released their first-ever two Striped Marlin, weighing from 100 to 115 pounds, on two Ballyhoo at the 1150 Spot. Then, they went after a Dorado on a lure and a 42-pound Wahoo on a lure, all in the same area. They enjoyed having the different species to target in the Cabo waters.

Dirk DeVries, Jesse Eslick, Joseph Meyer, and Mike Harris fished aboard the “KNOT WORKIN,” a 35-foot Cabo Flybridge, with Captain Cesar and Mate Abraham. They first fished around 3 to 18 miles outside the Herradura, where they caught and released two Striped Marlin weighing 100 to 120 pounds on lures. They continued on their way, and about 20 to 24 miles outside of the Herradura, they caught fifteen Yellowfin Tuna on lures and bait weighing from 10 to 20 pounds.
