TUNA, TUNA, TUNA, NOW AT CABO!

Pisces Sportfishing Fleet August 16 – 22, 2024 This week’s weather and fishing remained like the preceding week. Although fewer sports fishers were out, fishing overall, especially the yellowfin tuna and billfish numbers were slightly higher, and the size of the tuna caught also increased. The variety was affected as more of the fleet targeted the bigger tuna—all in all, it was a very productive week, and it appears that the upcoming week should remain the same. If you have a preference or your bucket list lacks some of the species listed in our report, let your crew know what you would like to target.

August 16 to 22, 2024 Overall Catch Success Rate, All Species Combined
Catch Success Rate 95.24%, Billfish, 46.03%, Dorado 17.46%, Tuna 73.02%, Other Species 12.70%

Ruthless Tuna Team with their lates catch

“RUTHLESS,”  a 31-foot Bertram with Captain Beto Lira and Mate Mario J., along with the group from Idaho, Dax Hardcourt, Leroy Harcourt, Manuel Ramirez, Tanner Harcourt, and Whyatt Dewitt hooked Seven very nice-sized (25 to 139-pound) Yellowfin Tuna on Palo and flying fish on the 1150 Spot. A 139-pound yellowfin is a once-in-a-lifetime Yellowfin! Congratulations!

Darren Rudetsky, Jeremy Keller, and Michael Mahlmann, from Corpus Christi, Texas, took off on the “REBECCA,” also a 31-foot Bertram run by Captain Jose Ramon Alucano and Mate Jose to the 95 Spot. They didn’t realize what a fantastic day they could expect. They caught and released Four-Striped Marlin weighing 100 to 120 pounds on curry and caballito, Seven Yellowfin Tuna in the 6 to 8-pound range that took Palo, and Two Skipjack that also hit the Palo. What a day!

“CALIENTE,” a 42-foot Cabo Flybridge run by Captain Jaime and Mate Luis A., took Jaime Gonzalez to the Herradura Spot, where he alone released Two Striped Marlin weighing 80 to 100 pounds on caballito and caught Eight Yellowfin Tuna, weighing from 20 to 40 pounds on Palo and curry, 26 miles out from the 150 Spot. He also released One 250-pound Blue Marlin twenty-six miles from the 150 Spot. Jaime Gonzalez had a smile on his face when he left the dock.

From Corona, California, Rene couldn’t have been happier when he caught his 13 Yellowfin Tuna weighing 10 to 15 pounds on lures and Palo outside the 95 Spot while on the “LA CORONITA,” a 40-foot Cabo Express with Captain Manuel Sr. and Mate Manuel, Jr.

Andrea with their days catch

When Craig Margulies and Shayne Margulies from Encino, California, chartered the “ANDREA,” a 28-foot Uniflite, with Captain Fernando Noyola and Mate Marcelo D. in charge, they couldn’t believe their luck when the crew found them a 30-pound Wahoo on curry at the San Jaime Bank. Their trip was complete when they ultimately caught 15 Yellowfin Tuna on curry in the 10 to 20-pound range in the same area.

Captain Bruce and Mate Carlos S. aboard the “ADRIANA,” a 28-foot Uniflite, took their anglers, Daniel Phillips, John Phillips, and Robert LaPierre, from New Providence, New Jersey, to catch Nine Yellowfin Tuna from 10 to 20 pounds that bit on Palo at the Herradura and released One 200-pound Blue Marlin on caballito.

The Panga Anamar II underway

On the 24-foot Panga, the ANAMAR II, Victor Gutierrez managed to get a variety of fish for his guests from across the pond, David Woolner and Peter Woolner from England.  They caught an Eight-pound Dorado that took a curry, a Five-pound Yellowfin Tuna that also bit a curry, a Skipjack that weighed about three pounds on a curry on the Arcos Spot, and a 15-pound Roosterfish that they got on a caballito at the Margaritas.

James and Kieran Watson had a thrilling day on the “BBII,” the 37-foot Viking Billfish 2018, with Captain Hector at the helm and Mate Joel overseeing the cockpit when they caught and released a 120-pound Striped Marlin on a Ballyhoo, Four Small Yellowfin Tuna weighing up to 14 pounds on Palos and lures, and One 320-pound Blue Marlin that put on quite a show all in the same area, 30 miles from the 180.

A blue marlin about to be released

On board, the 35-foot Cabo Flybridge, the “RIPPER,” Jerry Hancock, Kayle Ward, Mike Boon, and Travis Decker watched Captain Abel race to what they would later discover was outside the San Jaime Bank. As they slowed, Mate Ninja began dropping back a green and yellow lure that a Striped Marlin almost immediately took. Handing off the rod, he immediately cast a caballito into the boat wake, and another hungry Striped Marlin came across the wake for a meal. Not only did they release Two 90 to 100-pound Striped Marlin, but they also released a 200-pound Blue Marlin that took a Chivato lure. The 14 Yellowfin Tuna weighing 10 to 15 pounds kept the excitement going. All were caught at the same location.

MY WAY, with a large yellowfin tuna

“MY WAY,” a 45-foot Viking, with Arturo at the helm and Mates Daniel and Josue, took the New Preston, California group, including Brian Dobson,  Paul Marable, and Raul Siguenza, to the area 25 miles from the 120 Spot where they caught and released Two Striped Marlin weighing around 80 to 100 pounds on curry, One 35-pound Dorado also on curry, and 15 nice-sized Yellowfin Tuna, weighing from 20 to 150 pounds on a Kite, Palo, and curry.

Captain Daniel and Mates Jesus and Omar, along with Chloe Vineberg and Ryan Shapiro from Miami, Florida, aboard the “C ROD,” a 38-foot Blackfin, headed to the Arcos Spot where the anglers caught Two Dorado, one small one weighing around eight pounds and a much larger 35 pounder, both on curry.  They also caught 14 Yellowfin Tuna in the 10 to 18-pound range on Palo and cuchy.

The VALERIE,” a 35-foot Bertram” with Captain Roberto Sandez and Salvador Flores with their group from Kinder, Louisiana, including Allysa Doumite, Camille Tramel, Mason Tramel, and William Tramel, headed straight to the San Jaime. There, they released One 120-pound Striped Marlin that ate a curry, Three Yellowfin Tuna in the 12-pound range that took Palo, and Three 4-pound Skipjack that also liked the Palo.

Tiburon crew h 2 large dorado

Mark Zarembo, from Vaughn, Montana, chartered the 31-foot Bertram, the “TIBURON,” with Captain Rosendo Gomez and Mate Carlos Santos running the boat. They took him to the 95 Spot, where he caught Two nice-sized Dorado weighing 28 to 38 pounds on caballito and Five Yellowfin Tuna weighing 10 to 12 pounds that eagerly went for Palo.

All in all, the week produced outstanding fishing. The weather has been in the 80s, and the fish were spread out. There are not as many boats in the different areas and no competition. You can target almost anything on your bucket list, especially if you are looking for a Striped or a Blue Marlin. There are also plenty of Tuna around, and this week, several nice-sized Wahoo were caught, along with Dorado, Sailfish, Skipjack, Silky Shark, Grouper, Bonito, Ladyfish, and Needlefish.
