“Calm Seas, Hot Bite: Cabo’s Spectacular Start to February”

The end of January and beginning of February highlighted a week of catching various species, with highly productive days for Striped Marlin at the Finger Bank. On Saturday, “BBII,” a 37-foot Viking Billfish (2018), left the Finger Bank after successfully releasing a remarkable SEVENTY-SIX STRIPED MARLIN! And on Monday, Ryan Caughren, from Florida, with Captain Hector and Mate Gil aboard the “BBII,” caught and released THIRTY STRIPED MARLIN. That same day, a group from Nebraska— Chris Loeffler, Dave Miles, Mary Teichert, and Suzanne Motica—chartered the “MY WAY,”a 48-foot Viking with Captain Arturo and Mates Daniel and Josue, and successfully released THIRTY STRIPED MARLIN, also at the Finger Bank.

Calmer seas prevailed early in the week, allowing anglers to take advantage of recent trends. With sunny skies and calm seas, fishing conditions remained perfect for catching Striped Marlin, Dorado, Wahoo, Jack Crevalle, Yellowfin Tuna, Sierra, Roosterfish, and Grouper. Anglers enjoyed their exciting and rewarding trips.

42-foot Cabo Flybridge, "HOT ROD."

Captain Erick Orozco and Mate José Ramiro Ramírez operate the 42-foot Cabo Flybridge, “HOT ROD.”  When their guests, Anthony Aderhold, Jerome Shaw, and Tom Kalishman from Cabo San Lucas, indicated a desire to target Striped Marlin, they headed to the area around Rancho San Lucas, where the anglers caught and released two Striped Marlin, one around 110 pounds and one larger, around 160 pounds, on mackerel. They also landed a 40-pound Wahoo on bait in the same area. The group left satisfied with their trip.

Jesus Valadez, Justin Bishop, Luisa Restivo, Michael Hinkelman, Nick Gage, Oscar Maldonado, and Tanner Bates from Montgomery, Texas chartered the “CHASIN TAIL,” a 62-foot Viking with Captain Pepe de la Payne and Mates Ulises, Ramón, and Dulce in charge. They caught a variety of fish at the Los Arcos, including two 40 to 50-pound Wahoo on Ballyhoo, six 30 to 35-pound Dorado on Ballyhoo, and they caught and released one Striped Marlin in the 100-pound range on cocinero.

55-foot Viking, "HAPPY ENDING,"

Saturday was slow for the 55-foot Viking, “HAPPY ENDING,” as Captain Alan and Mate Omar took their Dallas clients, James Clausen, Jr., Matt Stafford, Nathan Landman, Trevor Plouffe, Troy Reeder, and Tyler Higbee,  to the Margaritas, where they landed a single 30 to 35-pound Wahoo on a Rapala.

“BBII” 37ft Viking Billfish 2018 HECTOR Y Gilberto WITHRyan Caughren, Elizabeth, and Louis Sullivan from Florida disagreed with the Happy Ending group’s view that it was a slow day. They (Viva Finger Bank!). The team successfully released SEVENTY-SIX STRIPED MARLIN, each weighing between 90 and 110 pounds, along with two Dorado, also caught at the Finger Bank at 25 pounds each, and one Jack Crevalle around 12 pounds caught on bait at San Cristobal.

 "RUTHLESS," a 31-foot Bertram

Captain Beto Lira and Mate Super Mario welcomed their guests aboard the “RUTHLESS,” a 31-foot Bertram, before departing for the Lighthouse. During this trip, Andy Kittams, Danny Lundy, Doug Eriksen, Pete Dancer, and Robert Dawes from Las Vegas, Nevada, successfully caught and released two Striped Marlin weighing between 100 and 120 pounds using bait. The group then proceeded to Herradura, where they caught six Yellowfin Tuna ranging from 8 to 40 pounds, as well as six Dorado up to 40 pounds, also on bait.

"MY WAY," a 48-foot Viking

Chris Loeffler, Dave Miles, Mary Teichert, and Suzanne Motica from Nebraska selected the “MY WAY,” a 48-foot Viking, captained by Arturo with Mates Daniel and Josue, for their fishing experience on Sunday. The group traveled to the Migrino, where they successfully caught two Wahoo weighing 25 and 30 pounds using Rapala lures, as well as three Dorado ranging from 15 to 20 pounds with Ballyhoo.

Ryan Caugren, from Florida, headed to the Finger Bank with Captain Hector and Mate Gil aboard the “BBII,” a 37-foot Viking Billfish (2018), where he caught and released THIRTY STRIPED MARLIN weighing 110 to 120 pounds, and one 35-pound Dorado all on bait at the Finger Bank (Viva las Finger Bank!). Although he caught and released fewer than he had on Sunday, he was still proud of the number released.

From Nebraska, Chris Loeffler, Dave Miles, Mary Teichert, and Suzanne Motica finally caught and released the Marlin they had been seeking on Sunday. They chartered the “MY WAY,” a 48-foot Viking with Captain Arturo and Mates Daniel and Josue, and successfully released THIRTY STRIPED MARLIN at the Finger Bank. They also caught a 15-pound Dorado on Ballyhoo. The Finger Bank remains productive.

"REBECCA,"  a 31-foot Bertram,

“REBECCA,”  a 31-foot Bertram, with Captain Jose Ramon Alucano and Mate Velez, headed toward the 180 Spot. When they were 25 miles out from the 180 Spot, Jake Lawagie, James Gale, Katherine Riewe, Lindsay O’Donnell, and Mason Lawagie, from Hastings, Minnesota, landed one 30-pound Dorado and ten Yellowfin Tuna weighing between 5 and 18 pounds using bait, feathers, and Rapalas.

"RIPPER," a35-foot Cabo Flybridge


Cecilia and David Crass from Aledo, Texas, chartered the “RIPPER,” a 35-foot Cabo Flybridge, with Captain Abel and Mate Juan Ramon. They caught and released a 120-pound Striped Marlin on Ballyhoo and landed five Dorado from 25 to 40 pounds at the Los Arcos.

The Brooklyn, Michigan group—including Debra Lynn Wisniewski, Martin John Wisniewski II, Martin John Wisniewski, Nicholas James Wisniewski, and Robert Richardson—chose the 31-foot Bertram “TIBURON” with Captain Rosendo Gómez and Mate Carlos Santos. They traveled to the Cerrito del Golden, where they landed an 18-pound grouper and four 5 to 12-pound fish on chum at the La Brecha, and they enjoyed the diverse catch.  

On the”ADRIANA,” a 28-foot Uniflite, Captain Bruce and Mate Arturoook Jeffrey and Jenell Oswalt 15 miles outside of the Lighthouse, where they landed four Yellowfin Tuna with bait and feathers weighing up to 45 pounds. The couple was pleased with their catch.

"ADRIANA," a 28-foot Uniflite

Lori and Robert Moore, and Brian and Veronica Halley selected the “ADRIANA,” a 28-foot Uniflite, for their Thursday fishing trip, accompanied by Captain Rey and Mate Mario. They headed out to the Los Arcos Spot, where they successfully caught and released three Striped Marlin in the 100 to 130-pound range on curry and Ballyhoo. In addition, they landed an impressive 35-pound Dorado on a cocinero.

 "REBECCA," a 31-foot Bertram

Gray Cheema, Irving Fong, Jeff Lovett, and Steven Rose traveled from British Columbia, Canada, to fish aboard the “REBECCA,” a 31-foot Bertram captained by Orlando with Mate Marcelo D. During their excursion to the San Jaime Bank, they caught and released one Striped Marlin weighing approximately 120 pounds on cocinero, two Dorado, each weighing around 20 pounds on a Kite, and a Thresher Shark weighing about 90 pounds also on a cocinero. The Canadians’ fishing day was marked by successful fishing and lots of fun and camaraderie among everyone on the boat.
